My hometown is Owen Sound, Ontario. I am the youngest of three. My parents encouraged my brothers and I to participate in sports and music on top of our academics. At the age of 13, I completed my Grade 8 practical and Grade 2 Theory in cello. I performed with the Georgian Bay Symphony for several concerts. As well, I participated competitively in gymnastics for four years during this time. In 2005, I graduated from high school at Pretty River Academy in Collingwood, Ontario. After taking one year off, I started post-secondary studies again through correspondence from Athabasca University. Medical school is a long way off, but I continue to academically aim in that direction.

Alpine Skiing has been a family sport for the Yurkiw’s since I was born. We are members at Georgian Peaks Ski Club and I was enrolled in the race program immediately. This is not to say it’s ‘in my genes’. My dad raced for the first time in January 2009. I am, currently, approaching my fifth season with the Canadian Alpine Ski Team. I am very excited to begin my first opportunity to qualify for an Olympic Games.
